Karl Berger and the Creative Music Studio Orchestra at the Kingston Jazz Festival The Creative Music Studio Orchestra, an all-star ensemble of soloists, will perform as part of the Kingston Jazz Festival on Friday, June 27, 7:30 to 9 PM at City Hall, 420 Broadway, Kingston NY. The orchestra, with many members of the original, legendary CMS Orchestra of the 80's, is led by Karl Berger. Participating soloists include: Jayna Nelson, piccolo and flute, Sylvain Leroux, flutes and altosax, Tomas Ulrich, cello, Don Davis, alto sax and contraalto clarinet, Peter Apfelbaum, flute and tenorsax, Peter Buettner, flute and tenor sax, Joe Giardullo, sopranino and soprano sax, Tom Collins, baritone sax, Bill Ylitalo, baritone sax, Joe McPhee, fluegelhorn, Bob Selcoe, trumpet, Ted Orr, guitar, John Menegon, bass, Tom Schmidt, bass, Tani Tabbal, drums, Ingrid Sertso, vocals / poetics, Karl Berger, melodica, conductor -- Compositional materials by Karl Berger, Don Cherry, Thelonious Monk. "Spontaneously conducted and improvised dynamic movements between solo, duets, trio alternating with full orchestral motions are the trademark of Karl Berger and the Creative Music Studio Orchestra". During the '70- and '80's, the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio was considered the premier study center for contemporary creative music. Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, CMS brought together leading innovators in the jazz and world music communities. Currently, CMS is archiving historical performances and presenting performances of the Creative Music Studio Orchestra.
